As those of you who I have actually met will attest, I’ve long been a believer in the “green light, the orgiastic future” and the brilliance of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s every word.  So, to console myself after this week’s New Yorker article detailing my mentor’s abject failures as a screenwriter — “I just couldn’t cut it as a hack”, Fitzy noted wryly –  I logged on to my girlfriend’s Facebook account to make snarky comments to myself about people I don’t really know. And then I saw this:

You know you’ve made it when you show up here…

NASHVILLE, TN—Titans nickel back Vincent Fuller announced Tuesday that he was taking dime back Eric King under his nickel-backing wing in an effort to help the fourth-year player develop the coverage skills necessary to play in long passing situations—and in the hope that King would himself mature into a nickel back someday. “

Showing Eric the third-down-and-more-than-10-to-go ropes is personally fulfilling, and I think he’s starting to feel like he’s really a part of the secondary,” said Fuller, adding that he was happy to be the kind of trusted situational defense counselor King could look up to. “Mostly I try to share my experiences on the field and emphasize that, even though dime back is only a part-time defensive position, he needs to make the most of his three to five opportunities each game. We’ve talked a lot about him breaking out of his soft-cover backpedal, working on his tackling, and, uh, the backpedal thing some more.” Fuller meets with King three times a week to work with the dime back to eliminate penalties, quiz him about defending routes, and make sure things are going good at home.

As the 139th Spectacular enters its fourth week, a number of fascinating storylines are starting to develop, but none more compelling than the rivalry so infamous it requires only first names.
“This fall they will battle it out for the title of World’s Greatest Picker…”

The APT is speaking, of of course, of our very own Dan & Dave. 16 short years after the original dynamic duo, one questions remains: who will win Gold in the 2008 Spectacular, Dan or Dave?

Let’s break it down and then on to the picks…

The APT would like to point your attention to a recent article in ESPN which named Camden Yards the 2nd Most Important Venue in Sports, just ahead of Madison Square Garden and Augusta National.

The article, which reiterates the APT’s belief that Camden Yards was the genesis of the retro crazy that’s come to dominate our culture, bestows this honor upon the Baltimore landmark ”because it’s a ballpark, not a stadium. Because it did all that and kept the luxury suites understated. Because of the brick warehouse, Boog’s barbecue pit and the way Cal made us feel when he went to work for the 2,632nd day in a row.”

Coming in at #1 on the list was, unsurprisingly, the McDonogh Upper School Quad. The fabled lawn, with its gorgeous green & orange color scheme and red-brick dormitory stickball homerun rite of passage, served as the inspiration for Camden Yards and the now legendary warehouse.

“The 1999 MIAA Championship was won on the playing fields of McDonogh…”

Ahem…

To the tune of Yeasayer’s 2080, I bring you, Twenty Oh Eight ( Flacco’s Lament )

I can’t sleep when I think about the league I’m playin’ in
I can’t sleep when I think about the offense I was thrown into
Defenders juiced up like Lou Ferrigno
With no Jon Ogden, what the hell’m I gonna do?

( chorus! )

It’s a new team, thank god for Jim Beam
Maybe six wins? So embarrassin’
In twenty – oh – eight, we won’t be that great
So don’t bet the house, never bet the house…
It’s a new year, Favre’s no longer here
Packers still win, o’er Vikings
And E. King shines bright, covers Jaguars all night
(mumbling) One McDonogh man ain’t enough…

If you need me, I’ll be watching film with Cagey Cam
Hapless Fins, Broncs win, check scores on Monday morning
Folks, it ain’t alright, but its alright, yeah its alright, yeah its alright
( alright )
Cause in no tiiiime, John’ll be gone, and I guess I’ll still be playin’ here…

It’s a new team, thank god for Jim Beam
Maybe six wins? So embarrassin’
In twenty – oh- eight, we won’t be that great
so don’t bet the house, never bet the house
It’s a new year, Peyton’s knee shed a tear
Unlike Falcons, Colts still win
And if my gut’s right, Seahawks win outright
( mumbling ) I like Baumer to win Pick ‘Em

( sing-long! )

Yeah, yeah! We would all jump at the chance to be S-D Chargers
Yeah! I could have 21’s back and be boys when he carries us always
And the pain that Martz felt being fired will be used to fuel their offense
I can’t pick us to win in week one, no Ed Reed, no chance ‘gainst those convicts!

x2

( chorus! )

( sing-along outro…)
